IELTS Writing Task 1- Adverbs and Adjectives to Describe Trends

In order to make your write-up remarkable, you need some adverbs and adjectives to define trends. The examiner expects the candidate to clearly explain the trends illustrated in the graph. It can be done with the help of adverbs and adjectives. First you must have a clear idea what an adjective or adverb is.

➤ Adjective- These words qualify nouns.  There was a sudden increase (noun)  in the number of candidates. 

➤ Adverbs- These words qualify verbs.  The number of candidates increased (verb) suddenly.

Types of Trends



Vocabulary for “Constant” Change

Adverb Adjective Example
Constantly Constant
  • The number of students increased constantly. 
  • There was a constant rise in the number of students.
Stably Stable
  • In five years, the prices inflated stably
  • The prices of mobile phones were stable.
Persistently Persistent
  • The students were applying for jobs persistently.
  • The number of job applications was persistent.
Tedious Tediously
  • There was a tedious shift in the number of applicants.
  • The number of applicants shifted tediously.

Vocabulary for “Moderate” Change

Slightly Slight
  • The number of students increased slightly. 
  • There was a slight rise in the number of students.
Moderately Moderate
  • In five years, the prices inflated moderately.
  • The prices of mobile phones were moderate.
Gradually Gradual
  • The prices in 2017 were increasing gradually. 
  • The number of job applications was gradual.
Marginally Marginal
  • The number of students increased marginally. 
  • There was a marginal reduction in the prices of mobile phones
Gently Gentle
  • The gentle increase in the population is visible in the graph.
  • The population decreased gently.

  • The number of students increased dramatically.
  • There was a dramatic rise in the number of students.
Sharply Sharp
  • In five years, the prices inflated sharply.
  • There was a sharp increase in prices of mobile phones
Suddenly Sudden
  • The number of job applications declined suddenly.
  • There was a sudden decline in the number of job applications.
Substantially Substantial
  • The number of students increased substantially.
  • There was a substantial reduction in the prices of mobile phones
Significantly Significant
  • The population decreased significantly.
  • The significant increase in the population is illustrated in the graph.
Swiftly Swift
  • The use of luxurious goods fell swiftly.
  • There was a swift fall in the use of luxurious good.
Abruptly Abrupt
  • There was an abrupt change in the number of applicants.
  • The number of applicants changed abruptly.
Promptly Prompt
  • The number of residents in Colony B increased promptly.
  • There was a prompt jump in the number of residents in Colony B.

Vocabulary for “Extremely Great” Change

Enormously Enormous
  • From 2011 to 2019, the number of students applying for fine arts shifted enormously
  • From 2011 to 2019, there was an enormous shift in the studying applying for fine arts.
Overwhelmingly Overwhelming
  • The use of plastic bags in 2012 reduced overwhelmingly.
  • There was an overwhelming reduction in the use of plastic bags during 2012.
Massively Massive
  • The demand of electric cars jumped massively.
  • The graph shows the massive jump in the demand of electric cars.
Tremendously Tremendous
  • The consumption of organic fruits rises tremendously.
  • The tremendous rise in the consumption of organic fruits is evident in graph (b).
