Verbs to Define Trends in IELTS Writing Task 1

In the IELTS Writing Task 1- various types of graphs, pie-chart, tables, and images are give. In order to fetch marks for vocabulary, you must be able to identify the type of trend in a graph and describe it neatly. Here is the list of verbs that can be used to avoid repetition of the words. 




Words to mention upward trend

Word Example
Increase The number of students increased in 2018.
Rise The demand of fuel has been rising since 2016
Climb up The consumption of organic coffee climbed up during 2015.
Soar The prices of electronic gadgets are soaring.
Swell The number of undergraduate candidates was swelling.
Jump The population of senior citizens jumped in the last decade.
Rocket The use of mobile phones rocketed after 2017.
Hike The number of applicants hiked after the TV advertisement.
Inflate The prices of consumer good inflated

Words to describe downward trend

Word Example
Fall The number of students fell in 2018.
Sink The demand of fuel has been sinking since 2016
Drop The consumption of organic coffee dropped during 2015.
Dip The amount spent on the charity funds dipped. 
Plummet The prices of electronic gadgets are plummeting.
Descend The population of senior citizens descended in the last decade.
Decline The use of mobile phones declined after 2017.
Diminish The number of applicants diminished after 2012
Dwindle The prices of consumer good dwindled.
Plunge The enrollment of the candidates plunged in 2012

Words to describe static trend

Word Example
Remained stable The number of hours spent on leisure activities remained stable.
Remained static The demand of fuel remained static.
Stayed constant The consumption of organic coffee stayed constant in 2015.
Levelled out  The amount spent on the charity funds and the amount used for children's' fund levelled out. 
Did not change   The prices of electronic gadgets did not change drastically.
Plateaued at The population of senior citizens Plateaued in the last decade.
Stabilized at After 1993, the prices of liquefied petroleum stabilized at $10.

Words to describe "Fluctuating" trend

Word Example
Oscillate The prices of organic manure oscillated in the five year.
Fluctuate The demand of fuel has been fluctuating since 1972.
Vacillate The consumption of organic coffee dramatically vacillated in 2015.

Words to describe Highest Point

Word Example
Peak The price of the electricity reached its peak  in February 
Climaxed  The demand of fuel climaxed after 1993
Hit the peak The consumption of organic coffee hit the peak in 2015.
Touch the highest point  The amount spent on the charity funds touched the highest point with an company A's contribution.
Reach the vertex  The prices of electronic gadgets never reached the vertex after the latest foreign policy
Reach the apex The population of senior citizens reached the apex in the last decade.
Summit After 1993, the prices of liquefied petroleum were at the summit.
